Coffee Up Front, Treasures in Back: Meet Bradenton's Coffee Cow

When Stephanie Sweeney and Charles Asher bought a used school bus back in 2021, the plan was pretty simple. They'd fix it up into a "schoolie," a converted bus for family road trips, and see where it took them. Charles did nearly all of the work himself, something like 90% of it, right down to the wiring and the solar panels on the roof. The whole family pitched in to gut it, and the kids helped rebuild it.

Somewhere in the middle of all that, the road-trip rig turned into something none of them quite pictured at the start. 

What rolled out the other side was the Coffee Cow. A black-and-white-converted bus where you’ll find dirty sodas and iced lattes made with espresso brewed in a Moka Pot, the old-fashioned Italian way. 

Stephanie and Charles have taken the time to do things right, from making their syrups and cold foam in-house to choosing beans from Kitty Town Coffee, a roaster whose sales help feed shelter cats. 

The drinks are all genuinely affordable, and the price on the board is the price you pay, tax already folded in. Want extra coffee, an oat milk swap, or a sugar-free option? No upcharge, no fuss. And the register won’t prompt you to leave a tip. Stephanie and Charles don’t expect one, but if a customer insists, they’ll simply donate it to the charity of the month. 

It’s little details like these that make the Coffee Cow pretty special on its own, but it’s only the beginning. 

Head around back for a “crow’s nest” full of treasures 

The back half of the bus, affectionately known as “The Crow,” is a tiny shop where you’ll find a collection of books, trinkets, collectibles, artwork, and other handmade goods. Everything is modestly priced, and they’re happy to take barters or trades.

Bring a few gently-used books or other items, and trade them for something of equal value. Or, donate items and Stephanie will happily keep records and deliver the proceeds to the nonprofit of your choice. 

There’s also a barter board, where anyone can post a service to trade. For example, someone might post an offer for dog training and exchange it for tree trimming, or barter a massage for a haircut. “Your offer doesn’t have to be tied to your profession,” Stephanie explains. “You can offer any type of service to help other people in exchange for something else.” The idea is to lean on each other a little more and on cash a little less.

The Crow is also becoming a home for local makers. If you paint, sew, or build something with your hands, Stephanie wants it on her shelves. “We’re happy to sell it for them,” she says. “And don't charge commissions or any kind of consignment fees." Many of the artists donate all or a portion of the proceeds to their chosen charity. 

Ask them how they can afford to be so generous, and they’ll simply shrug it off. “We're not trying to get rich,” Stephanie says. “We're just trying to do something good, and honestly, this is fun. We love working together." Charles agrees.

Even though they spend most of his days off working in the bus, he wouldn’t have it any other way. “We're kind of codependent on each other,” they laugh. “We never get enough time together.” 

It's a slow build, done their way. They funded it out of pocket, with no business loan and no debt, buying what they needed when they could and pouring whatever the bus earns back into it. Down the road, when they move closer to family, Stephanie hopes she and her sister can open a brick-and-mortar built on the same principles they're testing out now.

The Coffee Cow is available for weddings, car shows, markets, concerts, festivals, and other events. It’s a great non-alcoholic alternative for guests, and they’ll also offer at least one sugar-free option for both lattes and dirty sodas. There’s no extra charge for events, and no hidden pricing.
