Old Manatee Historic District

Bradenton's Roots, Still Very Much Alive

If you want to understand where Bradenton came from, Old Manatee is where you start. This is the oldest part of the city. The original Town of Manatee, settled along the banks of the river in the mid-1800s, long before Bradenton had its current name. Manatee County's first courthouse, built in 1860, still stands here. It's the oldest remaining wooden courthouse in Florida.

But Old Manatee isn't frozen in time. While still home to many of the historic buildings and experiences of the past, Old Manatee now features charming boutique shopping, stylish event spaces, and dining experiences for any taste. The result is a neighborhood that wears its history lightly. You can spend the morning at the Manatee Village Historical Park, a free living history museum with restored 19th-century structures including a courthouse, church, blacksmith shop, and pioneer homes, then walk a few blocks and find yourself browsing a vintage shop or settling into a locally owned restaurant for lunch.

The Manatee River runs along the district's edge, and a stroll along the waterfront here feels distinctly different from the bustle of the Riverwalk downtown. Quieter and more residential it's the kind of walk where you notice the old oaks and the Spanish moss and the way the light hits the water in the late afternoon.

On select Sundays, the Friendly City Flea brings a curated outdoor market to the district, with vendors, artists, vintage finds, plants, food, and live music from across the Sarasota-Bradenton region. It's become one of the area's favorite weekend rituals, and a great way to meet the people who make this community what it is.

Good to know: Manatee Village Historical Park is free to visit and open year-round. It's a wonderful stop for families, history lovers, and anyone curious about Florida's early settlement.

You'll love it if you enjoy: Local history, vintage and antique shopping, riverfront walks, and laid-back weekend markets.
