There are many nonprofit organizations in Bradenton and the surrounding area. Each one is doing incredible work to support our community by helping those less fortunate, promoting the arts, providing education, and more.
During our nonprofit spotlight series, we’ll highlight information about a different local nonprofit each week. This week, we were thrilled to chat with St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store to learn more about their mission and how we can help. Here’s what they had to say.
Can you tell us a little bit about your mission and how you help to support our community?
The St. Vincent de Paul Society is a non-profit 503c organization. We are not church-owned or supported. SVDP is affiliated with a national Catholic organization but exists locally to support our community.
We operate a thrift store to assist our local chapters with funds and to donate items to those in need who are referred to us. Our store is staffed with volunteers and a few paid staff who manage the day-to-day business responsibilities.
Our assistance is available to all members of the community.
Who do you serve and why?
We serve local community neighbors who are in need of clothing, household goods, and/or furniture. There is a referral process for these services through our local chapters and various local organizations. In addition, we can provide a small amount of clothing, shoes, and/or hygiene items to walk-ins with an emergency need.
Our mission is to help provide basic items to preserve the dignity of our neighbors most in need. Our faith-based affiliation prompts us to show God’s love and care to others.
Can you describe a few of your key programs?
Truck pick up
We offer limited appointments for pick up of furniture items to be donated to the store. Call the store (941-746-0622) for more information.
Hygiene kit items
We prepare small bags to be given to our walk-in neighbors with basic items. We welcome donations of SMALL-size deodorants, washcloths (or wipes), and insect repellant.
Truck Days at local churches, and neighborhoods
We can work with your group to bring our truck to your place for an advertised Saturday morning event where people can bring donations to our truck. Please call us to schedule this event in advance. We do not pick up leftovers from Community Yard Sales.
Group shopping events
We love to host special shopping days for your group to shop at our store! Please call us to schedule the best times and days.
What’s the best way our community can help?
Our store operates through the generosity of our local community. We are amazed and thankful for the items donated to us each week.
We have a group of the best volunteers around who work hard to sort, price, and display so many things.
Our main request is for any item that is donated to be clean, not damaged, and ready to be used. We don’t have the ability to repair, clean, or repaint furniture items or rugs. Clothing, linens, and dishes should also be clean.
Our website has published a list of the items we cannot accept along with hours that we are able to receive those donations. We are a small, but mighty group of volunteers who do the very best we can as we are able. Thanks for your understanding!
We add to our volunteer staff as often as we have the space! Please visit the store and let us know if you are interested. We’re located at 1111 8th Ave W in downtown Bradenton.
We have a great need for clothing items for babies and children. When a family is referred for clothing and shoes for kids and school-age children, we don’t have much to offer. We would love to have more of these items to meet those needs. Visit our website to learn more about how to donate.
What else do you want us to know?
We invite you all to visit our Store to discover some needed items and unique treasures! Newly arrived items are put out daily. Your support of our Store helps us to help the Bradenton community.
