Second Heart Homes

Second Heart Homes is a Sarasota-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that gives homeless adults living with mental illness something most programs don't: a permanent place to live, plus the long-term support to actually stay there. It serves Sarasota and Manatee counties, and its mission is to revive the dignity of the people it houses through housing, support, and love.

The numbers tell the story. 13 homes across the two counties, 80 people who are no longer on the street, and $0 in government funding, so the work runs entirely on individual donations and private-sector giving.

Housing is the starting point, not the whole plan. Residents are single adults who want to change their situation and are ready to manage their mental health and work toward real goals. Once someone joins, the team helps them handle the things homelessness strips away: replacing a birth certificate and ID, finding a primary care doctor, starting therapy, building a budget, learning computer skills, staying sober, and finding work when that's possible. Staff visit the homes and work with residents one-on-one.

Then there's the part that's harder to put on a spreadsheet. Residents live alongside people who've been through similar struggles, and that shared history builds a community of respect instead of isolation. As one resident, Richie, put it, he's just happy he's not living alone or on the streets anymore.

The organization holds Candid's Platinum Seal of Transparency and plans to add three new homes every year.
