When cooler weather finally arrives, most of us welcome the respite from the heat. But for Manatee County’s homeless population, cold temperatures mean discomfort and sleepless nights.
Local nonprofit organization Turning Points, is currently asking area residents to help collect new or gently used coats, hats, gloves, and scarves for men, women, and children. This coat drive will run from now until November 23, 2022.
Cheryl Hedger, Director of Volunteer Services at Turning Points, says, “We expect to serve hundreds of clients this winter, many of whom have been affected by the economic crisis created by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. We need the support of our local community so that we can provide coats to the people we serve.” Last year, Turning Points was able to collect and distribute more than 1,500 coats to children and adults in Manatee County.
Want to Help? Organize a Coat Drive!
You can help this noble cause by organizing a coat drive among your family and friends or at your place of business. You may choose to sponsor a drive for just a few short days or longer, depending on your preference.
All coats collected should be dropped off at the Turning Points Donation Center, located at 705 17th Avenue West in Bradenton. The donation center is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 am until 4:00 pm. Please keep in mind that Turning Points does not have the ability to pick up coats.
Children’s coats are especially needed, so if you have any extra, please consider donating them. If you have a large donation, kindly place the coats in plastic bags and attach a piece of paper that lists your name, contact information, and the number of coats inside.
You Can Make a Difference
Your help and support are desperately needed to keep residents warm this winter. Any form of donation is welcome. Whether you donate a single coat, host a coat drive, or choose to make a monetary donation, your contribution will be appreciated.
“The impact of providing warmth to a neighbor or family is so powerful” ~ Cherly Hedger
