In Manatee County alone, we create an average of 1,020.68 tons of landfill waste every. single. day. That comes out to an average of 314,369.50 tons each year!

While we could all probably do a bit better when it comes to recycling, one local artist is taking his recycling efforts to a whole new level.

Meet Mark Burrow, owner of Art Junkies Garage Gallery and Festival Grounds in Bradenton’s Village of the Arts.

Mark and his wife Nellie began turning trash into treasures nine years ago. They came from humble beginnings, first selling their art at local flea markets, and, later, moving on to art shows. In 2017, when they came across a piece of land in the Village of the Arts, they knew this was their calling.

During monthly ArtWalks (held on the first Friday and Saturday of each month), you can now find a mini art market on their festival grounds, located at 1130 12th St. W. in Bradenton. The market features four to eight artists and other crafters as well as a wide selection of Art Junkie pieces for sale. You’ll also find live music and an excellent food truck for your eating pleasure.

When asked about his inspiration, Mark said: “We’re trying to save the world, one piece of art at a time.”

Art Junkies pieces are made of 96% recycled materials. Since relocating to the VOTA, they’re also able to collaborate with other artists and share many of the materials they can’t use.

If you’re looking for unique home decor that’s equal parts crazy and fun, you’ve just found it! You’re sure to be “wowed” by the selection of eclectic and ingenious items made from upcycled and reclaimed materials.

You can stop by the garage gallery Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am until 4 pm (and 9 pm on Friday). Or visit them during the monthly ArtWalks, held on the first Friday of the month from 6 to 9:30 pm and the first Saturday from 11 am until 4 pm.
