The holidays can sneak up on you with more stress than joy, and sometimes it feels like there's no pause button. In this edition of Tips from Local Pros, Cheryl Albright, owner of Soul to Soul Yoga shares a reminder that yoga can help bring calm even during the most chaotic times.

For many people, the holiday season is a mix of joy and stress. Between travel, family gatherings, shopping lists, and busy schedules, this time of year can feel more overwhelming than festive. If you've ever ended December feeling exhausted instead of renewed, you're not alone. The good news? Yoga offers simple ways to bring calm back into your holiday season.
Why Holidays Can Be Stressful
Stress around the holidays often comes from juggling too many expectations. We want to make everything perfect, be present for loved ones, and still keep up with daily life. Add in disrupted sleep, rich foods, financial pressure, and crowded spaces, and it's no wonder our bodies and minds feel taxed.
Stress doesn't just live in our heads. It shows up in tight shoulders, shallow breathing, headaches, fatigue, and even irritability. Yoga meets us right there--helping to release tension, slow down, and reconnect with ourselves.
Breathing to Reset
The fastest way to bring calm is through the breath. When stress rises, breathing tends to get shallow and fast, which keeps the nervous system in "fight or flight" mode. A few slow, intentional breaths can switch the body back into "rest and digest."
Try this:
Inhale through your nose for four counts, letting your belly rise. Exhale for six counts, letting your shoulders drop. Repeat for one to two minutes. You'll likely feel your body soften almost immediately.
Gentle Yoga You Can Do Anywhere
You don't need a mat or a full class to feel better. A few stretches sprinkled into your day can ease stiffness and lift your mood:
Neck release: Slowly roll your shoulders back and drop your right ear toward your right shoulder. Hold a few breaths, then switch sides.
Seated twist: Sit tall in a chair, place one hand on the opposite knee, and gently twist. Hold for a few breaths on each side.
Forward fold: From standing, hinge forward at the hips, let your arms dangle, and breathe deeply. This pose encourages relaxation and eases tension in the back.
These movements take only minutes but can reset both body and mind.
Don't Forget to Rest
One of the most powerful yet overlooked parts of yoga is rest. In the rush of the holidays, giving yourself permission to pause is essential.
Lie down in Savasana (on your back, arms relaxed at your sides) for five minutes with your eyes closed. You can also try legs-up-the-wall, resting your legs against a wall or chair. These postures calm the nervous system, reduce fatigue, and help improve sleep--something many of us need this time of year.
Practice Mindfulness in Daily Moments
Yoga isn't only movement--it's also about awareness. You can bring mindfulness into small holiday moments:
Eating slowly and truly tasting your food.
Taking a deep breath before responding in a stressful situation.
Noticing the beauty of lights, music, or laughter around you.
Saying "no" to events or commitments that drain you.
Starting or ending your day by naming one thing you're grateful for.
When we practice presence, stress loses its grip and joy has more room to shine.
A Season of Balance
The holidays may always be a little busy, but they don't have to leave you drained. With simple tools like breathing, gentle movement, rest, and mindfulness, yoga helps us find balance and reconnect with what matters most.
