Manatee’s Best Hidden Gems: Michelle Stitch & Sew

There are so many interesting and exciting people and places in Bradenton, yet many don’t receive the attention they truly deserve. Over the next several months, Discover Bradenton will be uncovering Manatee County’s best “hidden gems” – the locals making waves and must-visit places that are some of the area’s best-kept secrets.

This week, we were thrilled to connect with Michelle Oberhaus, the creative mind behind Michelle Stitch n Sew. Here’s what she had to say…

Michelle, I’ve been fortunate enough to get a first-hand look at some of your heartwarming creations. Can you tell us a little bit more about your business?

I do alternations and make memory bears, pillows, blankets, and graduation quilts. These items are typically made from t-shirts, sweaters, and other clothing items. They’re a great way to turn old clothes into a treasured memory.

My business has evolved over time. I first started about 20 years ago making dog bandanas for a friend who did craft shows. When we moved to Florida 5 years ago I started my business down here and am so glad to have touched the lives of so many people in our area.

Wow, that’s great. Where did you get the idea for creating these memory items?

I made my first one about 15 years ago when my mom passed away. I wanted to make a memory bear for each of my boys from my mom’s clothing. After I made those I was constantly being asked to make them for others who have lost a loved one.

I bet you must really love what you do. What part of your business do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy meeting new people and the personal experience I have with my clients. I especially love creating special memory items for them.

And you also share your creations with local charities, right?

Yes, I’ve made many bears and blankets to give away at charity events. They’re always a popular item.

Thanks so much for your time today. Is there anything else you want us to know?

In addition to making memory items, I also do alterations of all kinds and will travel to people’s homes if they cannot come to me. I also do other projects, like making crafts for vendor shows and even working on boat seat covers with a boat company in Sarasota.

My granddaughter is also a big help. She loves stuffing the bears for me. ♥
