Shoeboxes for Seniors: Spreading Cheer this Holiday Season

Shoebox for Seniors

Are you ready to take a break from shopping for family and friends and do something that will really make a difference instead? How about buying some small gifts for the elderly in our community? There are thousands of seniors in Bradenton who are forgotten about during the holidays. They often live alone, don’t have families, and may not receive any gifts or visitors during the holiday season.

The Lakewood Ranch Elks Club is hosting their 14th Annual Community Shoebox Drive and Reception on Sunday, December 8th. You can help spread some good cheer by filling a shoebox with small gifts or making a $20 donation at the door.

Want to participate? Here’s how:

  1. Wrap a shoebox (top and bottom separately)
  2. Purchase 10 or so items and pack them inside the box with some tissue paper
  3. Secure the box with a rubber band and identify it as either male, female, or non-gender specific.
  4. Bring your shoebox to the reception

Some of the best items to include in your shoebox include: Chapstick, flashlight with batteries, hand lotion/moisturizer, holiday trinkets (non-breakable), Kleenex, mechanical pencils, notepads, pens, paperback puzzles (large print), shampoo, slipper socks with grips, holiday cards, toothbrush/toothpaste, alcohol-free mouthwash, and soap.

Please don’t include items like razors, candy, candles, breakables, or gift cards.

The Reception runs from 4 until 6 p.m. and is held at the Lakewood Ranch Elks Club (4602 Lena Road, Bradenton, FL 34211). Admission is free with a shoebox or $20 donation and will feature complimentary lite bites, complimentary wine and beer, and a free photo booth. There will also be fun raffles, auction, shopping at “The Nutcracker’s Nook,” and Santa! Note that spaces are limited, so make sure you reserve your spot by clicking here so you can be a part of The Most Meaningful Holiday Party of the Year.

The Elks Club has set a goal of collecting 1,000 shoe boxes. They’ll be delivered to local seniors throughout the holiday season by Meals on Wheels PLUS Volunteers.
