ABOUT THE ARTIST
In 1989, Kay signed up for a basket class and has been hopelessly hooked since. She and 37 other basket weaving enthusiasts helped start Lake Country Basket Guild which grew to over 350 members. She has traveled to basket making conventions all over the Midwest and studied with some of the very best teachers in the country. Every civilization from the beginning of time had basket weaving. They used local materials, like wicker, willow, sweetgrass, pine needles, Birch bark, and reed. Patterns and techniques have been passed down from generation to generation and brought from the old world to the new world centuries ago. Indigenous American Indian patterns and colors are unique by tribe and have had a great influence on basket patterns woven in America. Experts can look at a basket and tell if it’s Hopi, or Aztec, or African, or 1000 BC Italian, and more.Address: 7014 Willow Street
