Join us to listen to the harrowing stories of Holocaust survivors in a monthly series. Helga Melmed was born in Berlin, Germany. At age 10 she witnessed Kristallnacht and saw her synagogue and school burn. In 1941 her family was taken to the Lodz Ghetto, where she lost both her parents. She was on the last transport out of the ghetto to Auschwitz in 1944. She was then in a slave labor camp and on a forced march that ended in Bergen Belsen where she was dying from typhoid and tuberculosis. She was rescued and sent to a Swedish hospital to recover.
Presented by speakers from Holocaust Speakers Bureau of the Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee, dedicated to honoring and assisting the victims, survivors, and families affected by this tragic and horrific era in history.
